Airboat builders build to order — the “dealer” is usually the builder itself, or a broker handling used inventory. There are no franchise lots full of identical models. You pick a hull, an engine, and rigging, and the builder puts the boat together for you.

How Airboat Dealers Work

A few builders run a traditional storefront with new and used boats on the floor. More common: a shop that builds to order and sells direct, by phone and reputation. Brokers work the other side — consignment sales, used inventory, and matching buyers to boats.

Brokers typically work on consignment: the seller keeps the boat, the broker markets it and handles the paperwork for a commission. Ask what the commission covers — advertising, water-test coordination, title transfer — and get it in writing before the boat is listed.

All three models are legitimate. What matters is how the sale is handled and what stands behind the boat afterward: clear paperwork, an honest description of the boat’s condition and history, and someone who answers the phone when you have a question six months later.

New vs. Used From a Dealer

Buying new from a builder gets you a warranty, your choice of power and layout, and a boat nobody else has run. Buying used from a dealer or broker gets you a lower price and a boat you can inspect and water-test today.

Dealer-used boats often come serviced and looked over — ask exactly what was done and get it on paper. Then verify independently anyway. The inspection rules don’t change just because a dealer is selling the boat: check the hull, engine, drive, prop, rigging, trailer, and paperwork the same way you would with a private seller.

Major Airboat Builders

These are the names you’ll run into most often when you’re shopping. One line each — do your own homework before you buy.

  • Diamondback Airboats — Florida builder and one of the longest-running names in the business.
  • What a Custom Build Looks Like

Most new airboats start with a conversation: what water you run, how many people you carry, and what you actually do with the boat. From there you pick hull size and material, engine type, reduction drive, prop, seating, and accessories. The builder gives you a price and a timeline — then you wait. Build slots run weeks to months depending on the shop and the season, so plan ahead if you need the boat by a certain date.

Get the spec sheet in writing before you put money down: hull dimensions, engine make and model, drive ratio, prop, and what’s included — trailer, rigging, gauges. If it’s not written down, it wasn’t promised.

Buying From a Dealer Out of State

Airboat builders cluster in Florida and Louisiana, but buyers are everywhere. If you’re buying sight unseen, get a full photo and video walkaround, and hire an independent inspection if the money is significant. Confirm the title situation in the seller’s state before you pay, and budget for transport — airboats on trailers tow fine, but long hauls add up.

    How to Choose a Dealer

Reputation. Ask around. Airboating communities are small and word travels — a builder with a bad reputation doesn’t stay hidden long. Look for years in business and owners who’ll talk about their boats.

Hull warranty. Get it in writing: what it covers, how long it runs, and who honors it. A warranty from a builder who’s been around decades means more than one from a shop that opened last year.

Engine support. Ask who services the engine after the sale — the builder, a local shop, or you. Know where parts come from and how long they take.

Visit the shop. If you’re spending real money on a custom build, go look at the operation. A clean shop building solid boats is worth more than any brochure. Watch how they treat customers already in the build queue — that’s how they’ll treat you.

Questions to Ask Before You Put Money Down

How long is the current build queue? What’s the deposit, and is it refundable? What exactly does the hull warranty cover? Who handles engine warranty work? Can I talk to recent customers? A straight builder answers all of these without hesitation. Evasive answers are your answer.
